and the annual sheet is called &#8220;Summary&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>So, how would you write a <em>single formula<\/em> to accomplish this?<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Excel_Practice_Test_Recommended_Approach\"><\/span><strong>Excel Practice Test: Recommended Approach<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Instead of trying to write one formula all at once,\u00a0<strong>break it into smaller pieces<\/strong> and build up to something more flexible by the end.<\/p>\n<p>At each stage of the process, you want to have a\u00a0<em>functional formula<\/em> in Excel &#8211; one or several MATCH functions for the Quarters!$E$9:$T$9 range and be done with this Excel practice test.<\/p>\n<p>But there is one exception:\u00a0<strong>we can use the INDIRECT function to create a\u00a0<em>variable<\/em> reference to another spreadsheet.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The syntax here gets a bit tricky because we&#8217;ll need to join together several parts to create a new version of the formula above, but here&#8217;s the basic approach:<\/p>\n<p>First note, that double quotes (&#8221; &#8220;) indicate <em>text<\/em> within functions such as MATCH <em>inside<\/em> the INDIRECT function, and the ampersand symbol (&#8220;&amp;&#8221;)\u00a0<em>joins<\/em> text with functions.<\/p>\n<p>So, in the original formula above:<\/p>\n<p>=SUMIFS(Quarters!$E$9:$T$9,Quarters!$E$2:$T$2,&#8221;&lt;=&#8221;&amp;Summary!E$2,Quarters!$E$2:$T$2,&#8221;&gt;&#8221;&amp;Summary!D$2)<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll replace the Quarters!$E$9:$T$9 part with the following:<\/p>\n<p>INDIRECT(&#8220;Quarters!$E$&#8221;&amp;MATCH($B4,Quarters!$B$1:$B$51,0)&amp;&#8221;:$T$&#8221;&amp;MATCH($B4,Quarters!$B$1:$B$51,0))<\/p>\n<p>What does this do in the context of this Excel practice test?<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>first part<\/strong> starts building the text for Quarters!$E$9:$T$9:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Quarters!$E$&#8221;&amp;MATCH($B4,Quarters!$B$1:$B$51,0) produces Quarters!$E$9.<\/p>\n<p>This is because the first text here, &#8220;Quarters!$E$&#8221;, simply prints exactly as-is within the Excel function.<\/p>\n<p>And then the MATCH($B4,Quarters!$B$1:$B$51,0) function finds the row position of the text we&#8217;re searching for in the &#8220;Quarters&#8221; spreadsheet, which is 9 in this case.<\/p>\n<p>So, Excel sticks together these two parts: &#8220;Quarters!$E$&#8221; and 9 to form: Quarters!$E$9.<\/p>\n<p>The next part here:<\/p>\n<p>&amp;&#8221;:$T$&#8221;&amp;MATCH($B4,Quarters!$B$1:$B$51,0))<\/p>\n<p>Simply finishes the Quarters!$E$9:$T$9 text. We use the &amp; character to join the first part to this part, and then we print the &#8220;:$T$&#8221; text in Excel.<\/p>\n<p>Then, to find the appropriate row number, we use the same match function and join it with the &amp;
